Set in a bay with rocky promontories Vizag has become one of India’s
most rapidly growing cities. It is already India’s fourth largest
port. Andhra Pradesh boasts of nearly 1000 kms of coastline with
eight districts having direct access to the sea. The state is dotted
with the breathtaking views of blue water caressing the golden sands
at different points along the length of the coast thrilling the
fun-loving holiday makers. Starting from Bheemunipatnam near
Visakhapatnam down to Mypad in Nellore district the coastline of A.P.
offers unmitigated joy to the sun worshippers and sea bathers.
The port town Visakhapatnam was once a small fishing village. It has
witnessed the reign of Ashoka, the Pallavas, Cholas and Gangas.
Later the British transformed it into a port town. Today, this
coastal city is the commercial and industrial heart of Andhra
Pradesh‘s isolated north-east corner and is home to India’s largest
shipbuilding yard. In twin town of Waltair to the north used to be
thought of as a healthy resort with fine beaches though increasing
atmospheric pollution is a problem. The good beaches are Ramakrishna
Beach along the 8 kms Lawson’s Bay and below the 300 mts. Mount
Kailasha 6 kms away.
Places of attraction :-
Hindustan Shipyard:
6.4 kms. Long, it is the nation’s biggest ship building yard. It is
located at Gandhigram at Vizag. The shipyard has four berths each
167.0 mts long. This makes all types of ocean going
vessels-Passenger liners cargo vessels as well as naval ships. It
makes for a good educational and entertaining visit. Visiting days
are Monday to Saturday between 4 pm and 6 pm.
Port:
The port was opened to ocean going vessels in 1933. Mineral
resources like Manganese and Iron ores are stored and shipped to
foreign countries.
Visiting hours: Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday between 4 pm and 6
pm.
Caltex Oil Refinery:
Situated 8 kms from Visakhapatnam the refinery is situated here on
account of the advantageous position of the harbour. Visiting days:
Monday and Friday between 1.30 pm and 3.00pm
Dolphin’s Nose:
Vizag’s best known sight is the rocky promontory known as the
Dolphin’s Nose jutting into the harbour. It is a bold headland 174
meters high and 358 meters above the sea level in the southern part
of Visakhapatnam. About 25 kms. North-east of Vizag is
Bheemunipatnam one of the safest beaches on this part of the coast.
It is also the site of the ruins of the east inland from here is
Hollanders Green the Dutch cemetery. Waltair the hilly seaside area
is edged by long beaches affording vies across the Bay of Bengal and
the busy Kolkata-Chennai shipping lane.
Andhra University:
The massive stone building of the Andhra University is just 4 kms.
from Visakhapatnam. It was opened in 1926. it is in the upland area
of Waltair. The red stone buildings are built like a fortress and
are well laid out on a large campus.
The Three Hillocks:
Each of the three hills here is sacred to a different religion. 5
kms. from Visakhapatnam a mount in the Eastern Ghats was cut into
three and they house the following shrines.
The Ross Hill:
The highest mount named after Mr. Ross a local who built a house on
it in 1864. This was later converted into a Roman Catholic Chapel
and named ‘Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’.
Darga Konda:
There is a mosque and a shrine of a Muslim sage Iashaque Madina who
was revered for his prophecies.
Sri Venkateswara Konda:
The temple was built by Captain Blackmoor in 1866 according to the
Telugu inscriptions.A Buddhist epic was discovered at Dhanipura
nearby.
The Zoo is large and attempts to avoid cages keeping it animals in
enclosures which are close to their natural habitats.

Other places of interest are VUDA Park, Indira Gandhi
Zoological Park and the Aquarium.
Sun-Kissed beaches: Walk on miles and miles of golden sands.
The Ramakrishna beach Lawsons Bay the best beach is the Rushikonda
Beach. For Swimmers water skiers and wind surfers it’s just the
