Location : 35
kms. From Panaji
Vasco-da-Gama or Vasco (as it is more popularly called) lies
approximately between the principal harbour Mormugao and the airport
Dabolim. About one km before Mormugao is Pilot Point a ruined fort
that offers views covering the harbour the sea the Zuari River and
Dona Paula beach. Vasco Da Gama is a busy industrial town with a
rather seedy feel about it-not helped by the presence of a well red
light district. With the new station at Margao taking over as the
main rail hub few travellers will bother to venture up to this town.
This is the passenger railway terminus of the Central Goa branch
line. Mormugao the state’s principal commercial port and one of
India’s few natural harbours is northwest at a distance of 4 kms. A
railway connects it with Castle Rock on the Western Ghats with
Ananyaka huts. 1 km before Mormugao is Pilot Point at the base of
the ruined fort which offers excellent views over the harbour the
sea the Zuary River and Dona Paula beach. Virtually nothing remains
of Marmagao Fort on the south headland of Mormugao Bay.
The town is called Vasco da Gama in honour of the finding of the sea
route to India’s teeming riches the spick and span city
geometrically laid out is fast modernizing multi-storeyed buildings
now coming up. It is the terminus of visitors coming to Goa by rail
and also served by the airport of Dabolim; the Mormugao harbour
makes it the gateway to Goa equal in importance to Panjim. When the
large export duties began to coffers the Portuguese built a modern
Aerodrome Radio Station a bridge over the river Sal and some roads. |
