Udipi one of
Karnataka’s most important pilgrimage sites is the birthplace of the
12th century saint Madhava who set up 8-Sannyasi maths (monasteries)
in the town. Udipi The Vaishnavaite Pilgrimage town of Udipi is 58
kms from Mangalore on the coastal road. The 13th century religious
leader Madhvacharya who advocated the Dvaita philosophy was the
founder of the temple lived and preached here at the Krishna Temple
which continues to attract pilgrims.
The Malpe beach attracts a lot of tourists and the pier has boats
running to St.Mary’s Island-Vasco da Gama’s first landfall on the
Indian soil. 5 kms. Inland from udipi is Manipal University famous
throughout Karnataka for its dance and drama school Yakshgana and
Anatomy Museum at Kasturba Medical College.The grand biennial
festival known as the Paryaya held in the month of January marks the
change-over of the turns.
Places of attraction :-
St.Mary’s Island:
This exotic island of endless beaches is Vasco da Gama’s gateway to
India. A geological formation of basalt rock pillars forms a
staircase into the sea. Boats from Malpe Udipi provided service to
this island 4 times a day. Alternatively you can hire a boat and
cover the whole island yourself for campers a sleeping bag food and
water enables an overnight stay.
Maravanthe:
The beach of Maravanthe is approximately 10 kms north of Kundapur
where sand spit has formerd at the Souparnika River delta. The
Gudajji beach is close by.
Katil:
27 kms east on the banks of river Nandini lies the famous Durga
Parameshvari temple.
Jamalabad:
40 kms east the fort here was built by Tipu Sultan and named after
his mother Jamalbee.
Baindur Beach:
This is 45 kms from Maravanthe. Ottanane near Baindur is famous for
its glorious sunset.
Kollur:
It is 140 kms north of Mangalore nestled in vast verdant woods;
Kollur is famous for its temple dedicated to Goddess Mookambika the
goddess of arts and learning. This region is characterized by high
green clad mountains and the ravishing rivulet Sowparnika. This
beautiful temple is situated on the scenic hill called Kodachadri.
Even the trek up hill is considered sacred and believed to confer
prosperity health and fame and receives thousands of devotees to the
temple. An annual festival marked by devotional pomp and attended by
scores of devotees from far and wide is celebrated between October
and November.
Sri Ananthasana Temple:
Sri Ananthasana Temple where Madhava is believed to have
de-materialized while teaching his followers is in the centre of the
temple square. Udipi is almost as well known today as the home of a
family of Kanarese Brahmins who have established a chain of coffee
houses hotels across South India. |
