Mussoorie

Area : 6.42 sq.kms.
Altitude : 6580 mts.Above sea level

Mussoorie named after the Himalayan shrub monsoor is spread out over 16kms along a horseshoe-shaped ridge overlooking the Doon Valley to the south. In 1827 Capt. Young of the British army chanced upon this extraordinarily beautiful wooded ridge and created the centre around which the hiss station grew. Just 38 kms. From Dehradun Mussoorie offers views of both the Himalayan ranges to the north and the Shivalik and plains to the south. It became hugely popular as a summer retreat for the Raj set in Delhi and picked up a reputation as the place to have an affair. This erstwhile aristocratic resort is now a popular hill station and promises a variety of entertainment throughout the year. Landour retains much of the old-world charm of the place.

Places of attraction
Mussoorie Lake, Gun Hill, Bhadraj Temple, Camel’s Back Road , George Everest House and Nag Devta Temple.

Gun Hill: Gets its quaint name from the pre-independence days when a gun mounted on this second highest peak of Mussorie was fired to herald mid-day thus enabling people to adjust their watches. A 400 mts. ropeway connects the Mall to Gun Hill and makes for a thrilling trip. From here there are views of several peaks including Bandarpunch. A steep path also runs up to Gun Hill.

Kempty Falls: 15 kms on the Chakrata Road. This attractive waterfall has an altitude of 1370 mts. It is pretty and a popular picnic spot. Many touirists enjoy a bath at the foot of the falls during summer.

Municipal Gardens: 4 kms. A scenic picnic spot amidst a beautiful garden. It has an artificial lake and boating facilities.

Children’s Lodge: This is Mussoorie’s highest peak. A telescope mounted at this point provides some breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges and Doon valley.

Camel’s Back Road: Named after Camel’s Rock it is a charming pony trek walk of about 3 kms. A sunset view of the Himalayan range is recommended.

Jharipani Falls: 8.5 kms. An attractive picnic spot.

Nag Devta Temple: 6 kms. The ancient temple has many devout followers and it is believed to grant the wishes of those who come to pray here.

The Jheel: A picnic spot 6 kms. Away on the Dehradun Mussoorie Road with good view of the Doon valley offers pedal boats.
