The compact and busy little town of Mandawa was
founded in the 18th century and was fortified by the dominant
merchant families. It was built by Thakur Nawal Singh. This medieval
fort dominates the town with a painted arched gateway adorned with
Lord Krishna and his curious paintings on its outer eastern wall.
Chokhani and Ladia Havelis have some defaced erotic images. There
are also some fine baoris scattered around the town. The Goenka
havelis worth visiting include Ludharam Tarakesvar and Dedraj Turmal.
A Shiva temple with a rock crystal ‘lingam’ is also worth a visit.
The fort is now converted into a heritage hotel.
