With the Western Ghats in the east (Coorg district of Karnataka
State) Kozhikode and Wayanad districts in the south Lakshadweep Sea
in the west and Kasaragod in the north this district is bounded by a
wealth of natural beauty.The district itself share much of this
natural splendour and has been a key contributor to the cultural
religious political and industrial heritage of the state.In addition
this place also enjoys the credit of having been the cradle of many
a colourful folk art and music.
Kannur’s days of glory were under the Kolathiri rajas and its
importance as a spice-trading port was even mentioned by the
Venetian traveller Marco Polo.From the 15th century various colonial
powers exerted their influence including the Portuguese Dutch and
British.Many circus performers are based in Kannur.
Kannur the centre of the Moplah community a group of Arab descent
was also the capital of the North Kolathiri Rajas for several
hundred years.
Beaches :-
The Muzhappilangad Beach (15 kms from Kannur):
Black rocks protects this long clean beach from the currents of the
deep making its shallow waters a swimmer’s paradise. This is perhaps
Kerala’s only drive-in-beach where you can drive down the entire
length of 4 kms.
The Ezhimala Beach (50 kms.from Kannur):
The beautiful beach here has a hillock nearby ( 286 mts.height). A
naval academy is being developed here.
The Payyambalam Beach (2 kms. from Kannur):
This long lovely beach is a local picnic spot. This attractive beach
is 2 kms away from the old cantonment area.
The Kizhunna Ezhara Beach (11 kms. from Kannur):
This beautiful stretch of sand is one of the most secluded beaches
in Kerala.
The Dharmadam Island (17 kms. from Kannur):
The small 5 –acre island covered with coconut palms and green bushes
is a beautiful sight from the beach. Permission is required to enter
this privately owned island (100 metres away from the mainland at
Dharmadam).
Hill Stations:-
Pythal Mala (65 kms.from Kannur town):
This enchanting hill station situated 4,500 ft.above sea level near
the Kerala-Karnataka border is rich in flora and fauna. It is a six
kilometer trek to the top of the hills. Pythal Mala the highest peak
in the former Malabar region is in the heart of a beautiful walking
area.Completely undeveloped the peak gives extensive views into
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.Near the top are remains of Stone Age
buildings.
Monuments and Pilgrim Centres :-
Arakkal Kettu (3 kms.from Kannur):
This is the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas the only
Muslim royal family of Kerala.
St.Angelo Fort (3 kms. from Kannur):
This sea front fort built of laterite was constructed in 1505 AD by
the first Portuguese Viceroy Don Francisco De Almeda with the
consent of the ruling Kolathiri Raja. After changing hands from the
Portuguese to the Dutch and then to the English the fort became one
of the important military centres of the British in Malabar. The
fort which is now under the Archaeological Survey of India offers
fascinating views of the Mappila bay fishing harbour.
At the end of the northwest promontory is the fort in the old
cantonment area built by the Portuguese in 1505 taken over by
British in 1790 as their most important military base in the
south.Built out of laterite blocks it is surrounded by the season
flower three sides and a dry ditch on its landward side. The highly
picturesque Moplah town is round the bay to the south of the fort.
Valapattanam ( 7 kms. from Kannur):
The small town on the Valapattanam River is well known for its
wood-based industries and timber trade.
Parassinikadavu (16 kms. from Kannur town) :
Sri Muthappan Temple stands on the banks of the Valapattanam River.
This pilgrim centre is famous for the Muthappan Theyyam performed
every morning and evening.The deity is offered the locally
appropriate though highly unusual gift toddy and dried fish. The
DTPC provides pleasure boating on the river near the temple.
Accomodation is available nearby.The Parassinikadavu Snake Farm
16kms from Kannur.Several poisonous and non-poisonous snakes are
bred. Remote and attractive rural setting.
