The capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar is a historic city with
close links to Mayapur, the 11th century capital of the Jitri
Dynasty. There is a fort within the city premises that belongs to
the 14th - 15 century. The fort is believed to have been built by
King Ram Chandra. Naharlagun and the new capital, Itanagar, a 10 kms
apart, together provide the capital’s administrative offices.
The place is earthquake prone and modern wooden framed buildings rub
shoulders with the more traditionally designed houses on the
hillsides. On the peak, is the residence of the Governor while on
the other there is a new Buddhist temple, with shops, bazaar, old
huts and new administrative buildings in between.
Itanagar is particularly appealing.
Other attractions are, Itafort (an old brick fort), Buddhist
monastery with well-kept gardens and on hillside, Buddha Vihar, on
the hill near Hotel Arun Subansiri, Ganga Lake situated at the
end of a rugged road, Jawaharlal Nehru Museum with good coverage of
tribal art, woodcarvings, musical instruments and religious objects
.( open: 10am-5pm. Sundays to Tuesday).
Places of attraction :-
Ganga Sagar Lake (Gyaker Sinti):
This beautiful forest lake is 6 kms. from Itanagar and can be
reached by a rough road through forests of bamboo and tree ferns. On
reaching the foot of the hill walk across the bamboo bridge up steps
cut on the hillside to reach a ride overlooking the forest lake. The
lake can be crossed in a row/motor boat.
Buddhist Monastery:
The yellow roofed Buddhist shrine attracts attention with well-kept
gardens on a hilltop with good views. There is also a tree that has
been planted by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Ita Fort:
It dates back to the 14th century and was built by King Ramachandra
of Mayapuri. The site covers an area of over 10 sq.kms. and consists
of two brick ramparts three gates and natural defences.
Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the Lower Subansiri district and is home to
tigers, leopard, elephants, barking deer and varied species of
birds.
Zoological Park:
The Royal Bengal Tiger, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Snow Leopard,
Panther, Great Indian Hornbill and varieties of rare birds can be
seen.
Handicraft Centre:
A good place to shop for shawls, carpets, carved baskets and the
famous northeastern cane and bamboo works. It is located at Lower
end of Tawang town near the hospital.
Polo Park:
It is on a ridge top with interesting botanical specimens including
the cane wood which looks like a palm. There is also a small zoo
within the premises.
Bhalukpong:
It is famous for the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary on the banks of the
Kameng River which offers excellent boating and fishing
opportunities. There is also an ancient Buddhist Stupa. Bhalukpong
in 182 kms from Itanagar. The nearest airport is Tezpur while the
nearest station is Rangpara (25 kms.) on the Northeast Frontier
Railway. |
