Ayodhya

Area : 10.2 Sq. kms.
Altitude : 26.90 mtrs above sea level

Ayodhya is situated on the right bank of the river Saryu. Just 6 kms. From Faizabad Ayodhya is a holy city of the Hindus and a popular pilgrim centre. A site of many a Hindu mythological events today pre-eminently a temple town Ayodhya is also famed for its close association with the epic Ramayana. It is regarded by many Hindus as the birthplace of Rama and where he once reigned. It is regarded by many Hindus as the birthplace of Rama and where he once reigned. It is also an important place for Buddhists as well as Jains. According to Jain scriptures it is the place where five Jains Tirthankaras were born. The Atharvaveda described Auodhya as ‘ a city built by gods and being as prosperous as paradise itself’ although today its just a small dusty town with an amazing abundance of temples.

Places of attraction:
Hanumangarhi: The residing place of Lord Hanuman the guardian of Ayodhya is a small walled fort atop an ancient mound with the Hanuman temple inside.

Kanak Bhawan : This has images of Sri Ram and Sita wearing gold crowns. It is also known as Sone-ka-Ghar.

Ramkot: The chief place of worship at Ayodhya.

Swarg Dwar: According to mythology Lord Rama is said to have been cremated here.

Mani Parbat and Sugrive Parbat: The first of these ancient earth mounds is identified with a stupa built by the Emperor Ashoka while the second is believed to be an ancient monastery. Other places of interest include Treta ke Thakur ,Rishabhadeo Jain Temple,Braham Kund , Amawan Temple, Tulsi Chaura, Nageshwarnath Temple, Tulsi Smarak Bhawan, Ram ki Paidi, Kaleramji ka Mandir, Daturvan kund, Janki Mahal, Gurudwara Brahma Kund, Ram katha Museum, Valmiki Ramayan Bhawan.Babri Masjid was constructed by the Mughals in the 15th century on what was reputed to be the site of Rama’s birth. The mosque was little used and was eventually closed to Muslims by the civil authorities and limited Hindu puja was permitted inside.In late 1992, a Hindu mob stormed the site and destroyed the Babri Masjid erecting a small Hindu shrine known as Ram Janam bhumi in its place. The destruction sparked riots across India and caused unrest in neighbouring Muslim countries.
